About CERC (Central Electricity Regulatory Commission)
Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) is a statutory regulatory body constituted under Section 76 of the Electricity Act, 2003, under the Ministry of Power, Government of India. CERC was initially set up under the Electricity Regulatory Commissions Act, 1998 and is responsible for regulating the tariff of generating companies owned or controlled by the Central Government, regulating the tariff of transmission licenses, regulating inter-state transmission of electricity, issuing licences to transmission licensees and power trading licensees, adjudicating on disputes related to inter-state transmission, and laying down standards of a Grid Code. CERC also performs functions of the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL) under certain provisions. CERC is a quasi-judicial regulatory body with powers to regulate India’s electricity sector, playing a pivotal role in the development of India’s power markets, renewable energy integration, and clean energy transition.
