The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA), functioning under the Housing and Urban Development Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, is recruiting a Junior Data Scientist on contract for its Digital Chennai Project. CUMTA was established under the CUMTA Act, 2010 to coordinate all urban transport agencies across the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA) — covering bus, metro rail, suburban railway, walking and cycling.
The Digital Chennai Project is building an Integrated Urban Data Platform (IUDP) that integrates spatial and non-spatial data from multiple city agencies, provides modular analytics, and enables data-driven urban transport planning and real-time city management. The Junior Data Scientist will develop ML/DL models to solve urban mobility challenges. This is a rare opportunity to work at the intersection of AI, data science and public urban policy in Chennai.

About the Digital Chennai Project
The two core technology solutions under this project are:
- Integrated Urban Data Platform (IUDP): A single data portal integrating structured and unstructured spatial/non-spatial data from multiple agencies, with modular analytics for comprehensive city performance tracking
- Urban Project Planning and Management (UPPM) Tool: Facilitates planning, coordination, supervision and monitoring of multi-agency urban capital and operations projects across Chennai
Key Responsibilities
- Research and test novel Machine Learning approaches by analyzing multi-source datasets
- Design data schemas, stores and pipelines for structured/unstructured data (tables, images, video feeds, email, social feeds)
- Connect to data sources, import and transform data for reporting and Business Intelligence
- Develop dashboards and data visualizations using Tableau or Power BI
- Build libraries for data extraction and manipulation for the Digital Chennai Platform
- Develop production-ready ML/DL algorithm implementations and test on live data for accuracy
- Create use cases with domain experts for solving business/urban transport problems
- Implement data integration and management solutions as per department requirements
- Support CUMTA’s data collection and data creation efforts
Eligibility Criteria
Essential Qualifications & Experience

- Cloud deployment experience — GCP / Azure / AWS
- Flask / Django framework familiarity
- MLOps — end-to-end ML model deployment in production (Kubeflow, MLFlow etc.)

- Big Data tools: Spark, Kafka

Remuneration

Work Location
